California Increases Its Minimum Wage

The new year brings new laws for California employers, and new rights and protections for California employees. Among these new laws is an increase in the state's minimum wage ([Labor Code §1182.12][0]), as amended September 2013). Be aware, however, this increase affects minimum wage and exempt employees. ([Labor Code §515(a)][0])

The first minimum wage change occurs on July 1, 2014, when the state's minimum hourly wage increases to $9.00. The minimum hourly wage will increase again, on January 1, 2016, to $10.00.

Interested in Adopting a Child?

There are several different methods for adopting minor children in California. Each method uses the underlying principle that people who want to adopt must be screened, and the adoption approved by the court. Adoptions typically cost between $5,000 and $10,000; however, some are as low as $3,000 while still others may be as much as $25,000, or more.

In every adoption, both birth parents must consent to the adoption, unless one of them has died or the court is willing to terminate the parental rights of a parent who will not consent or cannot be found.
